Bijan Mofid drew on Persian tales. His Shahr-e qessa (City
of tales; Tehran, 1969), perhaps the most popular of all
Persian plays, was written in traditional rhythmic style
that resulted in a kind of musical drama. Although it seems
at first glance to have been written for children, its main
audience, it is in fact a parable about contemporary
sociopolitical issues.
Bijan Mofid's Shahr-e Qesseh , directed by the author,
opened at the Shiraz International Festival of Arts in 1967.
The production toured Iran for three years and was later
made into an award-winning film. It was the first major
production of Bijan Mofid's Theatre Workshop, where many of
Iran's finest actors
